Majestic penthouse downtown Montreal by Rene Desjardins

Canadian interior designer Rene Desjardins has completed the interior design of a penthouse apartment in downtown Montreal, Quebec, the second largest city of Canada, after Toronto.

This 3,300 square foot residence was once two units turned to one– designed by Rene Desjardins as a contemporary, yet cozy feeling space all overlooking the city of Montreal.

“The client, after spending many years in a large home on Ile-des-Sœurs, had taken an apartment with a panoramic view of downtown Montreal, Mount Royal and the St. Lawrence River. From the start, it seemed to me that this magnificent view – one of the best in Montreal – should become the focus of the project. The client wanted to live in a bright, warm loft-style apartment. I suggested a space much like the large contemporary lofts of Manhattan or Los Angeles, a loft that would speak of calm and comfort yet look out over the continually changing showcase of the city”, said the architect.

The apartment actually comprises two zones. On one side, the shared areas: the living room, dining room and kitchen as well as a living area/home theatre. And on the other, the private quarters of the client and his son. And the home’s interior color palette of white with brown and gray creates a pared down warmth for the apartment, while high ceilings and recessed lighting fixtures with double spotlights mimic the aesthetic of lofts in Los Angeles or New York.

As for René Desjardins, who’s the founder of Gestion Rene Desjardins, he obtained his B.A. and his Master’s in the Philosophy. He has been a member of the Association of Professional Interior Designers of Quebec and the Interior Designers of Canada since 1989. Gestion Rene Desjardins has distinguished itself from the outset by its rationalist approach to design. An enthusiast of the Bauhaus movement, founder Rene Desjardins has injected a similar spirit of form and function into all his designs, typically executed with purely natural materials.

And yes, be reminded that Montreal is “Canada’s Cultural Capital” according to Monocle and was recently named a UNESCO City of Design. A coincidence? Don’t think so.
