Elliott Erwitt's "In Glass"

Wayne Degan is an extremely skilled photo editor and retoucher whose passion for colorizing old, black and white photos has inspired him to launch MetaColor, a project dedicated to the art of adding color to vintage, monochromatic images. By this, Wayne Degan is actually breathing new life into these photos (some of them iconic and epic), turning the dull grays into popping colours.

The skilled photo retoucher’s growing collection features a number of iconic actors (Lauren Bacall, Susan Sarandon to only name two), whose monochromatic portraits are practically given new life through colour. More than simply replacing grayscale with a wide spectrum of color, though, Degan adds his artistic touch.

Like every art, it was difficult to create something of quality at first, but after countless hours of practice, a great deal of trial and error, and some constructive criticism from friends, I began creating colorized images and really started to excelMy goal is to provide a website where skilled colorization artists can post their work, discuss their techniques, and provide useful lessons for those wanting to learn.

Wayne Degan’s colorization skills make it almost impossible to tell which photo is the original and adds to the fun of looking back at these young stars. Wayne Degan of MetaColor is a master of adding colour to black and white pictures. His technique is so effective that it seems to bring faces to life, altering facial expressions and adding nuance and personality that wasn’t there in the monochrome images.
